In a hockey game, while the game is being played, the fans are privy to roughly the same information as the players and coaches. In war, the situation is entirely different. We have no idea what kind of intelligence our generals are getting. What kind of information regarding effectiveness of previous bombing runs, or what kind of troop strength there is. Sure, we see sketchy information. But that's about it. Having said that, your point about carpet bombing being ineffective in history is probably a good one. I would keep one thing in mind though, the nature of war fighting is that as technology progresses, war fighting changes. The Gulf war demonstrated clearly that precision bombing, mixed with carpet bombing (given enough time), was a morale and enemy destroyer. And not something which strengthened their resolve. Then of course the question is, "is this war different then the gulf war"? Of course it is. Most of the Taliban are fighting for their homeland. Which wasn't the case in Kawaiit. Then again, so is the Northern Alliance. I expect we'll see more and more defections until most of the front line Taliban left, are actually Pakistani's thinking this is the Jihad their doctrine calls them to die for. We will have to see....Anything could happen, I just hope it happens quicker rather then longer, and the loss of our soldiers lives is kept to a minimum.
