Indeed. I was just thinking about what I said about "Things are never what they seem to be." I think it is our individual responsibility to be what we seem to be to the extent of our power to do so. Many of the world's ills are the result of too many not doing that. Making deceptive business deals -- things like that.

I feel so badly for those police and firemen in NYC. The mayor was firm as he should be, but I believe most of the firemen demonstrating were simply feeling the crushing effects of their work for the last weeks.

I know something of that, having been on forest fires throughout the first two thirds of my career. You work too hard, you work too long, you sleep too little, you have no idle time -- then you pay the price. The price is in the coin of human conflict. And you can't help it because everyone else is feeling just like you.
