However, most religions of the East are male oriented. For someone from the West its hard to understand I know, but the Eastern concept is not so much about male superiority than it is about division of labor. And thats a concept which I think the Eastern woman finds more acceptable than the Western woman, although lately the society is changing here too and women are reverting back to the roles of mothers and homekeepers. The woman's revolution just didn't work as well as it was s'posed to. The educated and literate elite of the East have found a balance today...the women who WANT to compete, are given the opportunity to compete as they have the benefit of equal education....(slowly, the rest of the society will follow) but if you compare statistics, you will realise that a LOT of professional Oriental and Central Asian women choose to be homemakers. East has always frequented the spiritual paths compared to Western materialic ones. Its just their mental makeup. A good home creates well adjusted kids. Restores harmony in a marriage. Now there may be something in that belief, or there may not be, but one finds very few instances of Columbine happening in the East. However, the adult males tend to be more aggressive because of the myth of male superiority. A lot of these 'rules' were designed to create a harmonious environment in the home. To ensure respect for the women. They were not meant to suppress women. And most religions of the East have evolved enough to ensure that a woman is treated equal, but with a kind of respect and obligation her frailty deserves. Somewhere along the way, these principles underlying most religions were hijacked by few self serving males of our society. Mainstream Islam, however, has chosen to not only not evolve -it has chosen to regress. And one of the reasons is the tight control of the clergy on the lives of the followers of Islam. There are no philosophers, no thinkers in that soceity, none at all, for none is allowed to live and create and speak. What the followers of Islam fail to realise, is that what used to work back then, hundreds of years ago, cannot, will not work now. Even Monkeys evolved into humans over centuries. And so should all religions. Change is constant. Change is permanent. Aga Khan is the only leader who has managed to maintain a semblance of evolution by interpreting Koran in terms of the modern world....and he has paid the price by being outcast from the mainstream Islam. If Islam has contributed anything meaningful towards the future of this world, it is only thru his efforts...his charity and his efforts to uplift the poor Moslems has been without the attached strings of fanaticism. The women in his sect are more free than any other Moslem women. Disclaimer : I am not an Ismaili.
