whereas earlier you could always count on processors from one generation having better performance than processors from the generation before (e.g. PIII better than PII, Pentium better than 486) at the same clock speed.

That's something the AMDers came up with to pour cold water on the P4. It was never a major point before.

<font color=blue>Aburner, Intels web site still has ICOMP charts for PII. So Tony is barking up the wrong tree. He should blast INTC for using a bunch of benchmarks to show CPU performance.
