John Templeton has been telling anyone who will listen for some time to move all their money into U. S. bonds--I don't know what maturities he had in mind.

How much did your Vanguard Long Treasury Fund rise over the last couple of weeks? My wife's TIP retirement account was up about 3.5% since September 30, including yesterday's decline, which is quite good for a bond fund.

I think I need to find some source of excitement outside the financial scene. John Templeton's brother, Harvey, took up formula V race car driving at the age of about 64, and the next year was rookie driver of the year in the category. That doesn't appeal to me. Some folks on this thread really enjoy playing the horses, but I live too far from any good tracks and I never followed horse racing anyway. Hunting and fishing have turned into corrupt and decadent forms of self-indulgence, at least by my standards. I used to enjoy catching sharks, but now I feel sorry for them. I really can't afford to take up hot air balloons or gliders--at least not until all the roofs, including a tile one, are totally rebuilt and until my daughter is self-supporting. What I saw going on in the casinos of a cruise ship I was on last summer seemed like the ultimate in boring stupidity.

Well, I can always clean the gutters and risk compound fracture and worse, as happened to a friend of mine recently. There you go: gutter cleaning for the ultimate adrenalin rush <g>.
