Magic Earth Announces Leading Software on Linux

Company to Offer New Bundled Software/Hardware PC Solution

HOUSTON, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Magic Earth announced today its plan to offer the company's revolutionary visualization and interpretation application, GeoProbe(R), on the desktop Linux operating system. The new application, GeoProbe 2.6, will be supported on selected models of the IBM(R) IntelliStation(R) running Linux, and will include the full suite of functionalities and tools available in the current GeoProbe release, as well as new features and enhancements.

Magic Earth will deliver the new bundled software/hardware PC solution to customers in the first quarter of 2002.

Commenting on the announcement, Yin L. Cheung, Magic Earth Executive Vice President and Director of Technology, said, "Magic Earth's Linux application marks a strategic move to expand our suite of scalable solutions and advances our on-going business objective to bring value to our customers through constant innovation. Desktop Linux has emerged as a viable computing platform for businesses in the energy industry, and Magic Earth is responding to the growing demand for the reliability and low-cost structure that Linux offers. GeoProbe 2.6 on Linux is a complete solution with the same feature set, user interface and proven performance our customers have come to rely on in their visualization and interpretation workflow. This new product provides the unique capabilities of our industry-leading software on a cost-effective desktop platform."

Magic Earth is working with IBM to offer customized hardware configurations that optimize CPU, memory and graphics performance. The combination of software and hardware will be offered as a full solution set, ready for work out of the box.

John Sarsgard, IBM Vice President of Marketing and Sales-America, said, "We believe that the upstream energy market is an ideal candidate for rapid adoption of Linux, because Linux has shown unsurpassed ability to better manage the high-performance computing requirements of seismic processing and reservoir simulation. We're pleased to be working with Magic Earth on this strategic initiative. It offers many long-term benefits to our mutual customers."

The new product offering will expand the list of bundled software/hardware solutions available from Magic Earth, and will provide customers with a broader range of seamless choices to fit their exploration technology needs - from very small datasets to the large regional-scale datasets common in the industry.

Magic Earth will continue to develop and support GeoProbe on SGI hardware running IRIX, recognizing that the SGI(TM) Onyx(R) family of graphics supercomputers uniquely serves a critical need in the oil and gas industry - fast, interactive visualization of very large datasets.
