Pakistan warning by Imran Khan

BY RICHARD BEESTON, DIPLOMATIC EDITOR

THE TIMES (UK)

NOVEMBER 3, 2001

IMRAN KHAN, the Pakistani politician and former cricketer, gave a warning yesterday that President Musharraf’s hold on power could be threatened if American military action continued in Afghanistan. Mr Khan, who heads the Pakistan Movement for Justice Party, spoke out against the bombing campaign, which he said was creating supporters for Osama bin Laden and the Taleban in Afghanistan.

Speaking at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, he said that the most worrying aspect of the campaign was the toll it was taking on Pakistan, which was “on the verge of bankruptcy” and whose leader, “a brave man capable of taking decisions”, was under siege.

“The majority of public opinion has swung against the US now,” he said. “Sympathy has moved to the people of Afghanistan.” If the bombardment of Afghanistan continued during Ramadan, public anger could swell against the authorities.

General Musharraf has cracked down on militant Muslim groups critical of his backing of America. But Mr Khan said that if the bombing continued, he could find himself isolated and possibly threatened by his own officers.

The few force the many into that precipice that will not be broached by us.

Folly indeed.
