Yes. I would call boards getting fried a massive problem. The frequency may not be as high as some had thought at one point (but since I never knew the frequency to begin with...).

The point still stands: If you don't build stuff to spec, don't expect it to work with future hardware (or software, for that matter). And don't blame Intel (or AMD or whomever) when the non-compliant hardware causes problems, massive or not.
