Lazarus, it is as I say because I select that reality, not because of some accidental sampling bias or intrinsic property of the Internet itself. The 'net can provide you with whatever you want. People are very blunt in writing because they don't have to hear themselves say it or watch the face of the person word by word. But only if they cultivate that. Many do. That is why you generally have to be nicer than you'd normally be in 3D to compensate for for other's lack of moderation.

There is also a tendency for people to react to a reply because they infer negative intent rather than guessing benign or even positive motivation. I think you are ultimately the editor of this virtual world, and can leave that interaction on the cutting room floor. I've found people generally nice if that is what you give out, but you have to do what I call active filtering. It certainly isn't a passive process.

<<It is easier to fire back a stinging rebuke if you don't have to look the rebukee in the eye and also have fear of physical violence on their part.>>

You know, I think thats a most interesting observation. It does seem that people are more willing to spout off without fear of retribution. I have to admit on more than one occasion I have thought how nice it would be for people to conduct themselves to my face in the same way they do online. But I've found in my time on SI that in most cases what you give is what you get. Now I'm not a guy who's really thrilled at the prospects of physical violence. That said I'm not a small man in stature. On more than one occasion I have found people to make remarks that they would never make to my face as I towered over them. What strikes me as odd is that you too have noticed this very same thing yet based on the out of order postings below you seem to have no problem with conducting yourself in a way that, if I read your posts intent correctly, you dont seem to advocate. Now, I'm not going to just single you out as the only offender as I have had my share of heated exchanges on SI. But I do find it interesting if not hypocritical that you would question the friendly spirit on SI on the one hand and engage in casting aspersions on the other. Just food for thought.
