Hi Hawkmoon; Re Pershing. I could find zero references on .mil websites to "pershing pig", so I doubt that the pig story ever happened. This site calls it a hoax e-mail: liemails.com Any sites out there that verify it? I don't recall anything from the Koran that suggested anything that silly. -- Carl

Hawk: Too much attention is being paid to the 72 virgins. I don't think Atta's note said anything about virgins, but did use the word paradise. And don't other religions use the phrase "going to heaven" as an equivalent for dying. And if I was going to heaven or paradise, why not have virgins or even non-virgins in plenty!! The 72 virgins are not the only reason people consider being martyrs. How do you explain the suicide bombings by Tamil Tigers? Many of these suicide bombers are women. Maybe they are looking for 72 virgin men!! Surely as or more difficult to find on earth. In other cultures, what about the Kamikaze pilots? Two factors influence their "martyrdom". First, that it will be recognized as martyrdom in their own community. Therefore, there must be some tacit support or empathy from the masses in the martyr's community, before the martyr would commit suicide. The true afterlife is perhaps only in the minds of the people left behind. The other is belief in ideology. In the name of religion and ideology many sane and educated people have killed millions of human beings. Communism was an ideology that drew thousands of converts from the well-off and educated. Stalin and Mao killed many in the name of communism. >>But these extremists are willing to die for Allah because they believe they are being promised 72 virgins waiting for them in Paradise. However, for them to reap this reward, they must remain pure... Just look at Muhammed Atta's death note, if you doubt how seriously they have been brainwashed about preparing themselves to enter Paradise. What they fear most is not being able to claim that reward in heaven for their sacrifice on earth>>
