Who is the enemy? What makes this war different from others is that the real enemy is a relatively small group of fanatics who hide among a large host population. Exterminating the host population might be effective but that's akin to burning down a house to rid it of a few pests. The reason the U.S. is insisting that states clearly declare their alignment is so that the global community as a whole can be enlisted to help clean out the infestation in a systematic way without unnecessary killing of innocents. And that is exactly the course that the U.S. is following, which I support wholeheartedly. Unfortunately this course will take longer than simply nuking anyone who "looks funny", but that's the price a society must pay if it is to call itself civilized.
