I certainly agree with you in terms of share volume/day. I would point out, though, that dollar volume in the Naz has been nearly cut in half since the top in Mar '00.

real ornery as they see their own income (which is closely tied to volume) decline over time.

I've seen it in previous Bear Markets. Spreads widen and it can get real nasty for folks that whose trading style involves a high portfolio turnover rate. Have seen the stress from frequent wrestling matches with MMs to get good fills actually contribute to "burn out" for some traders.
