Maybe more for repayment to society in general from Mr. Softy than purely historical purposes. MSFT and Mr. Gates might hardly notice it.

The overall tab for all parties involved - including man hours and energy - should be made known for historical purposes. Perhaps the $$ amount for actual legal fees was not that high, but add in the amount of energy devoted to it from all parties involved - every corporation, government, legal staff, media staff - and the total tab of energy, hours and capital devoted are historical.

I say that because in the end, it might have turned out to have been one of the largest wastes of capital and energy considering all the other segments of society that could have positively used the same kind of influx of capital and energy to solve problems and make progress. It's far from over considering both the judge and 18 states have to agree to the particular settlement of last week as well as the European litigation has yet to unfold and be carried out as that area of the world heads into recession at a lag to the US. So I don't want to say the settlement has been accepted and things are over - because they are not. More money, time and energy will most liekly be devoted to continue the excess waste.

Maybe it won't turn out to have been such a waste, but I have mixed feelings about it.

P.S. Toss in the XFL experiment as another waste.
