The second is more recent. SGI did give graphics patents to Nvidia, in a deal that turned out to be a much better deal for Nvidia than for SGI.

These are mistakes of the past. I don't think they are very relevant for the future of SGI.


Thanks for the info! Well the problem I had with this nvidia thing, is that at one point sgi was a large company and had resources to file patents up the wazoo. But shortly after this "sale" went through, SGI downsized pretty dramatically. You have to wonder if they can "bulid that portfolio" anymore... vs. the commodity box thing.

Wow this is a great thread at any rate.

I just couldn't believe the low mkt cap of SGI when I pulled it up yesterday.

When SGI bought cray five years back, they let Sun have a cray product, for almost nothing. That product became Sun's Starfire server and took many sales away from SGI.

Just wanted to point out that this product was based on Sun's SPARC microprocessor, so there was no way SGI was going to market it.
