Looks as though it happens often:

"The accidents effectively cut off Italy's main roadlinks to the north, following the shutdown in 1999 of the Mont Blanc tunnel after a fire that was also started by a truck."

FWIW, according to some star-gazers, we are now in an accident-prone period which will last for quite a while yet.

If they are right, accidents are bound to occur. And given the prevailing paranoia in the wake of 9/11, it is only too easy, rightly or wrongly, to attribute any spectacular accident to terrorist action.

As Switzerland is a neutral country, it would appear that what had happened was an accident. Just MHO only.
