Re: Dresden fab might be able to supply 20% of the world's CPUs by itself

Ha! You wish!

Dresden is good for 30% to 35% of world capacity next year, and AMD and Motorola share a process which means they could probably run another 5% to 10% at a Motorola plant - taking the total up to 35% to 45%.

If AMD were to be popular enough next year that capacity were an issue, then there'd certainly be demand for Durons - which could then be supplied from Austin for another 10% to 15%.

So AMD is set to supply 45% to 60% of total CPU demand next year if the opportunity were to present itself.

But a more likely number is 25% to 35%.

"I don't doubt that AMD will eventually move down to 45nm gate lengths (a feature of .09u manufacturing), but this will take a lot of fine tuning of those new 193nm lithography tools, which are still not ready for volume manufacturing, and won't be for some time."

Well, they replaced the lenses a while back, I suspect they hae done the fine tuning for those. As far as the 193mm tools, they have also been in place for a while. How do you know they aren't ready for volume manufacturing?

As far as their volume manufacturing, they have a lot of options. Fab25 can produce Morgans for a while, they have Fab30, and they could potentially use IBM as a contract manufacturer for SOI. Under the old agreement, AMD could do up to 20% of their entire volume that way, I don't know what the terms of the new agreement is, but 20% would still be a couple of million units a quarter.
