Top Chaebols Set Lower Goals for 2002
November 5, 2001 (SEOUL) -- On expectations of a continued economic recession next year, four top Korean conglomerates are setting lower management goals for 2002.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. the flagship subsidiary of the Samsung Group, said it expects this year's sales figures to fall short by about 4 trillion won to 33 trillion won for this year, and released a conservative growth forecast of approximately 5 percent for 2002 chip sales, while Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. and other Samsung affiliates have also forecasted annual sales growth of less than 5 percent in 2002.

Meanwhile, the LG Group said it expects sales figures for LG Electronics Co., Ltd. to increase by around 10 percent to an estimated 18 trillion won next year, and expects to see a slight increase in research and development growth for LG Chemical Co., Ltd. to around 200 billion won from this year's 115 billion.

The nation's leading mobile telecommunications operator SK Telecom Co., Ltd. has not yet set a sales goal for next year on fluctuating mobile telecommunications service fees, but said it expects the figures to be similar to this year's estimate of 1.5 trillion won.

Hyundai Motor Co., the main business unit of the Hyundai Motors Group and Korea's leading automaker, said it expects to see sales rise slightly next year from this year's expected 23 trillion won. (1,296.70 won = US$1)
