Aquila 3rd quarter net rises
November 05, 2001 07:28:00 AM ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov 5 (Reuters) - Aquila Inc. (ILA), a leading electricity and natural gas wholesaler, on Monday said its third-quarter profits rose 61 percent as it improved operating results at each of its divisions.

Net income increased to $37.2 million, or 37 cents per share, from $23 million, or 27 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenues increased 10 percent, to $8.8 billion from $8.0 billion, said Aquila, which is 80 percent-owned by UtiliCorp United Inc. (UCU).

As expected, gas and power commodity markets have settled down from last year's volatile third quarter, Aquila said of its wholesale services business. Clients have started to focus on how to minimize exposure to commodity risk and Aquila has seen an increase in its client-focused businesses, the company said.

Aquila said it acquired interests in six power plants in December 2000 when it purchased the assets of GPU International. Operating results from those projects have continued to be stronger than expected, it said. REUTERS
