Better days are definitely coming for the economy. They couldn't be too much worse! On the other hand, the fact that in the face of the worst kind of economic news, stock prices have been closing the eyes, throwing their hands up in the air, and rallying like there's no tomorrow does not bode well for the stock market in the short term. I have little doubt that we have yet to see The Bottom for the stock market.

These things are cyclical, and of course there will be better days. I just don't expect to see those days, either for the economy or for the stock market, within the next year. Maybe by 2007. For perspective, remember that after 1929, the stock market didn't reach new highs for three decades. I don't think it will take that long this time, but I certainly don't expect an 18 year Bull, possibly the greatest financial mania of all time, to be corrected by a couple of years of mild borderline recession.

"We all need this economy to bottom out and then recover. If it doesn't within the next year or so we're going to see lower stock prices. My bet is that true improvement will come late in 2002."

The recession is global. I hope for an improvement as well but with war and terrorism you never really
know what will happen.
