So apply your argument to the server and telecommunications market. Forget disk drives. M$FT isn't in the RAID market and probably never will be. While you're at it, factor in the players in the PC market for enterprise solutions.

Linux itself, clustered or not, isn't ready for prime-time.

You don't get something for nothing. Service is expensive. RAS is just the beginning of the equation.

Bad analogy. Hardware failures are generally local, single events. Given the Internet, a software failure in one node can propagate at the speed of light and bring down other nodes, especially if the "failure" is deliberately designed to do so. The only firebreaks in such a system result from the diversity of the subsystems involved. Get them all running Windows, and there's nothing to stop total system collapse.
