So scratch the 100 years war. England and France are neither contiguous or directly north and south of one another. Consider that a "lateral conflict" And as you correctly pointed out neither side really defeated the other. It ended as more or less a stalemate.

Also, in the case of N & S Korea, neither conquered the other. All S Korea did was regain it's own turf via the US Military

Trust me, exceptions to the north south thesis, where a southern population conquers, and excercises political control over both territories, is rare.
