Jerome,

If you have not already done so, turn off any screen saver you have running. Anything that runs periodically can interfere with these maintenance programs.

Jerome,

You probably have some task(s) running as a background service. To turn off these task run MSCONFIG...

1. Start=>Run
2. Type MSCONFIG and click OK
3. Click on the StartUp tab and note all of the tasks that are selected
4. Click on the General tab and deselect "Load startup group items"
5. Click on the Autoexec.bat tab and deselect programs that are not needed
6. Click "Apply" the click on OK
7. Then reboot the computer
8. Start=>Run
9. Type TUNEUP and click OK

TuneUp deletes unnecessary files, runs scandisk and defrag. When TuneUp has finished, reverse the changes you made:

1. Start=>Run
2. Type MSCONFIG and click OK
3. Click on the StartUp tab and select all of the tasks that were previously selected
4. Click on the Autoexec.bat tab and select all programs that you previously deselected.
6. Click "Apply" the click on OK
7. Then reboot the computer

Hope this helps.

B.K.

Norton Antivirus will cause this problem if you don't disable it before running defrag.

Jerome,

All of the advice already given is excellent....one more thing, Run ScanDisk first(not the Thorough One) before trying to Defrag. It wasn't clear in your post of the order you were doing it.

Brian
