China's Internet Use to See Speedy Growth; Most Users Prefer News
November 6, 2001 (BEIJING) -- Internet media has become the fastest growing means for information transmission in China over the past few years, with the number of users at 26.5 million by the end of June 2001, compared with just 620,000 in October 1997.

At the ongoing Third Asia-Pacific Symposium on Press and Scientific and Social Progress, symposium chairman Zhou Guangzhao said China will devote more attention to the Internet and information superhighway and adjust its policies to cope with the revolution in the news media.

It is estimated that by 2005, the number of computers connected to the Internet will reach 40 million and Internet users will top 200 million.

Vice-minister of the information industry Zhang Chunjiang said 63.5 percent of the information gathered by users on the Internet is news. Delegates of the symposium recognized that the fourth media will soon outweigh traditional media -- newspapers, radio and television.

China's Internet news media appeared in 1995, and has become an important part of China's news communication. The government has adopted favorable policies and financial and technical support to boost its development.
