I bet you think the NEW YORK TIMES is a "middle of the road" Newspaper!

I certainly do.

Lindy, I'm firmly on the political left but the ideas you have written about certainly do not represent my thinking. IMO you are espousing a very limited perception of what constitutes   the left.

I personally have found your occasional diatribes to be annoying but since I am somewhat acquainted with you, I've intentionally cut you a little more slack than I would for someone who just dropped in out of the blue.

We have all read your opinions on this matter and I believe you have covered the subject. Let's drop it and move on to the On Topic issues.

Gee, John, you really know how to insult me. :) Hitchens is a confirmed leftist who can't stomach how far the rest of the Nation's writers have gone in opposing our war on the Terrorists. Other than that, he has a long history of writing articles supporting the normal left position on this country.

Actually, I thought that would get your attention. :) Of course, Hitchens' is a lefty. But that's my point. On this one he, very definitely, takes your side of the argument. Moreover, "the rest of the Nation's writers" are actually, to repeat my earlier post, a fairly disparate lot on this question, as on a great many others. There are, obviously, boundaries to the differences. Haven't seen anything by Jerry Falwell published there recently. But, and this is my point, there are some fairly thoughtful articles and some less so. Like just about every other magazine I read.

It is pretty rigid on is dislike for American Culture. You know, I bet you think the NEW YORK TIMES is a "middle of the road" Newspaper!

Very good. I like that. Of course, I think the Times is a middle of the road paper. Unlike the Washington Times which is right wing.

As for the left's dislike of American culture, that takes a good long conversation. And is definitely an off topic bit for this thread. (As I'm certain FL already thinks all of this is.) But, just to make a quick point on this score, some very quick points: (1) since the American left is American it's part of that culture; (2) much of the conversation would depend on what you considered "American culture"; and (3) much of it would depend on what you considered the "left." For a left attack on what you have in mind, you might wish to read Richard Rorty's critique of some portions of the academic left in his Achieving Our Country.
