If Gartner and Meta think IA64 is going to be a success, and gradually eat away the RISC server market, that's about good enough for me. Gartner and Meta do not even acknowledge X86/64, or Hammer. Just agreeing with you here.

Given that Intel now owns Alpha and PA Risc, and everyone but Sun is transitioning to IA-64, I can see how the analysts would get that impression... :-)

It seems as if Intel's aim in the server space is to release CPU's that will be the tops in 32-bit code, and then have a separate 64-bit solution which offers best price/performance. AMD's approach sounds novel until you realize all it buys you is 64-bit addressability, and lacks the real power of current 64-bit processors. Those using 64-bit now need the power. By the time "the masses" are ready for that level of power, Intel can bring IA-64 to the desktop (~2005). Without an OS and programs compiled for it, the K8 is just going to be another 32-bit chip.
