Your so certain of your correctness it made me think of a guy named Herakleitos circa 500 BCE. He was one of those vacant headed liberal greek philosophers, who is held in high esteem in certain theological quarters. He said,

"Though reason is common to all men, most men live thinking they have private insight into the meaning of life."

We haven't changed much it seems.
