NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A prominent opposition leader who was brought out of Afghanistan late last week by U.S. personnel said Tuesday he has returned to the country, the Cable News Network reported.

Hamid Karzai is a Pashtun tribal leader and has been working to organize resistance in southern Afghanistan to the ruling Taliban regime. The Pashtuns are the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan.

In an interview with CNN, Karzai said Afghan villagers friendly to his cause warned him last Thursday about an impending attack. He said "we were ready for them." Karzai said most of the fighting against his forces was done by "Arabs." The Taliban version of the incident said some of Karzai's followers were captured and three hanged.

At a news conference Tuesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the U.S. "extracted" Karzai from Afghanistan, and it was his understanding the tribal leader planned to return after consultations in Pakistan.
