Tests of SatCon's evanescent wave surface detection optics system resulted in measurements of refractive index changes at the level of 10-8 over tens of minutes, a level that is significantly more sensitive than that which exists in commercially available devices. ``We're very proud of the recent technical advances that we've made in the development of our biosensor,'' said David Eisenhaure, SatCon's president and chief executive officer. ``Recently we were notified that we have been granted a patent for our novel technologies and that patent is expected to be published within the next several weeks. We are developing an optical sensing based system to detect traces of chemical and biologic agents in food and liquids including botulism and E.coli and other pathogens in near real time. Our goal is to develop a portable laptop-sized detection system capable of on-site detection of chemical and biologic agents rapidly and without extensive and time-consuming laboratory analysis. Demonstrating optical sensitivity at this level is a key element of the commercial advantage we are building into our system.'' SatCon's biosensor detects the presence of selectively captured targets on specially prepared surfaces through evanescent wave surface detection using precision optical techniques. The SatCon device senses minute changes in the speed of a laser generated beam of light interacting with the captured targets, in contrast to other evanescent surface detection techniques such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) that is the basis for several commercially available biosensing instruments. The SatCon technology is based on a state-of-the-art differential approach relying on a novel use of polarization to remove noise that had previously limited the sensitivity of other measurements. This additional sensitivity will allow SatCon's system to penetrate markets for the detection of microorganisms previously unobtainable with existing SPR instruments.
