It's a game the biggies like Nokia and MOT play. Purpose is to sell infra and handsets. The Q, on the other hand, sells neither. It only sells technology and ASICs, and that is insufficient potential reward when compared to the risk which is assumed with carrier financing.

These lessons are unfortunately only learned in the learning.

The only way you can really understand how good or how bad things are is by looking at the financial statement, and in particular, the pro forma results by segment. The chip operation had revenues up 25%. That's the real bread and butter part of the company, at least in terms of long term growth. That figure (for the 4th Q compared with last year's 4th Q) is pretty strong, given what's happening throughout the computer/semiconductor/telecom equipment industry. Other results are strong, compared to the rest of the industry.

The weaknesses come from writing down their investment in Globalstar, temporarily writing off loans in some of their overseas investments, and a change in accounting to spread licensing fees from a one-time gain to a period of seven years.

The fact that earnings per share were slightly below estimates is to me not all that big a deal, but it will probably cause the stock to tank tomorrow. Another buying opportunity.
