Excellent post, Bilow.

From your history lesson, the Brits know that the illogical, fanatical, muslim radicals can't pass up the chance to attack the "infidels" with their "spears". Sounds like a plan to me...

Thanks. Interesting. I have little doubt that the USA plus Allies could do just that... win a war against the Taliban.

Those 6 million "pawns" though...The Afghan civilians that might starve? What if 6 mil USA citizens were holed up in a war somewhere, with no food, and nobody in the region cared Also, a foreign army had a base there with plenty of supplies and piles of items suitable for pillage?

Could attract a very big number of muslims into the fight. Just thinking it through.

Lord Healey, former left wing senior UK Govt. minister, is losing his confidence on this... Of course it's Tony B's view that really matters.

Lord Healey calls for end to bombing

Lord Healey has become the most senior Labour Party figure to call for a halt to the bombing of Afghanistan.

He says continued bombing risks the overthrow of the Pakistani, Saudi and Egyptian regimes.

The former Defence Secretary also says there is the risk of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal falling into the hands of Islamist militants.

In a letter to The Times newspaper, he urges the Prime Minister to use his visit to Washington to persuade George W Bush to stop the bombing.

His plea is backed by Labour peers Lord Rea and Lord Young and crossbencher Baroness Warnock.

Lord Healey writes: "What are the disadvantages of continuing? More civilians killed; more discord in Pakistan, which could end in fundamentalists getting power and with nuclear weapons at their disposal; possible overthrow of the Saudi and Egyptian regimes and a general flare-up in the Middle East.

"The longer the bombing continues, the greater the danger, while leaving bin Laden untouched in his bomb-proof cave.

"We hope our Prime Minister will join in persuading Washington to stop it."
