Hmm, the post you linked to was written by E. And yes indeed I remember my response to it. Still feel the same way.

No, I don't remember Southern Dems initially opposing civil rights legislation, though I do remember some Repub support. As well there should have been

And I agree with your concerns about this new legislation. You're surprising me again. -g

Hey, how's your back? Are you back part-time to work?

Thanks for calling my attention (by PM) to this post, or at least for calling it to one that links to it -- the one in which I called Carolyn "an asshole" for calling X a traitor for dissenting from Carolyn's position on the war. (I said "rectum," I think. But then my evil twin said asshole.)

Your post gives me an excuse to talk yet again about the Bill of Rights. I say 'yet again' because I have made so clear, over the years, to anyone who frequents the same political discussion threads I do, my position on the issue of freedom of expression, which was recently called, surprisingly, to me, into question.

I haven't been reading the posts here, so maybe the conversation has moved past the First Amendment and the U.S.A. Patriot Act. If so, excuse my posting my views. (I'll plunder FADG. I've written so much about such subjects on SI I could just as well plunder feelies, but don't know where those are.)

BTW, any rumors about the survival, or maybe impending demise, of SI would be appreciatively received.

This post is long enough. So I think i'll paste a few First Amendment thoughts in separate posts....
