BT Demand for Alcatel DSL Modems Reaches Record Levels

Demand for Broadband ramped up by BT pricing and marketing campaign

London, November 2, 2001 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that
it has delivered a record number of Speed Touch DSL Modems to BT this week, following the
success of the recent pricing and marketing initiatives implemented by BT.

Alcatel will deliver an extra 30,000 USB Speed Touch Modems to BT in order to meet the
greater than expected increase in demand generated by the campaign.

Andrew Susans, Country Manager for Alcatel's Speed Touch DSL products, commented; "This
proves that the demand for DSL is out there and with further marketing of the benefits of
broadband services we can expect to see this demand increase even further in the coming
weeks and months."

The Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem is an external ADSL modem allowing speeds up to 200
times faster than traditional modems. By connecting the Universal Serial Bus interface of a
desktop or laptop computer and offering plug-and-play installation on Windows, Macintosh and
Linux platforms, the Speed Touch USB is the ideal solution for high performance applications
for residential customers or telecommuters.
