Microsoft Windows XP Off to Fast Start, According to WebSideStory's StatMarket

Web Usage Share of Microsoft's Newest Operating System Rises
To More Than 2 Percent in Its First Two Weeks of Release

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- WebSideStory, Inc.
(www.websidestory.com), the world's leading provider of outsourced e-business
intelligence services, today reported that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows XP
has gotten off to a quick start in only its second week of release. As of
November 5, 2001, the new operating system's global usage share had risen to
2.36 percent, according to WebSideStory's StatMarket (www.statmarket.com), a
Web site design and software optimization service and a leading source for
data on global Internet user trends. StatMarket publishes information
gathered from more than 50 million Internet users a day to more than
125,000 sites worldwide using WebSideStory's HitBox(R) Enterprise
(www.hitboxenterprise.com) and other HitBox e-business intelligence services.
Global usage share is the percentage of daily Internet users worldwide that
are using a particular operating system. Windows XP was launched Oct. 25,
2001.
Microsoft's Windows 98 is currently the leading operating system on the
Web, accounting for about half of all OS versions worldwide. Windows 98
surpassed its predecessor, Windows 95, in April 1999, less than a year after
its release.
"If the past is any indication, Windows XP will be the dominant OS on the
Web by this time next year," said Geoff Johnston, vice president of product
marketing for StatMarket."
Johnston noted that OS adoption rates vary widely from country to country.
For example, Internet users in Germany have embraced Windows XP much more
quickly than surfers in Japan (4.43 percent to 0.67 percent respectively as of
November 5).
In addition to global averages, StatMarket segments data by visitors in
245 different countries to sites in 120 different categories.

Re Linux servers as IT's lowest spending priority...

That's exactly the beauty of Linux! When you upgrade it, you don't have to spend any money. So of course Linux servers are low on the list of priorities. Its architects are not deliberately trying to come up with new creative ways of parting you and your money.

It would have been nice if the link was to the Goldman survey.
