The list of holidays in Japan doesn't answer the question of when the retail sales splurge for gift items such as gaming consoles in Japan occurs. Is it Doll Day? Children's Day (boys day)? New Year? Or some other period of time.

If less than 2% of the country practices Christianity, its hard to make the case there is a mad rush for Christmas purchases. I would assume the percentage of the country that celebrates Hannukah is also small - so the holiday rush for December would be muted in that regard as well. Perhaps somebody that knows Japan better than those of us who have participated in this particular subject thread will come along and provide the answer. Most of those holidays listed on that link Frank provided mention nothing about the exchange of gifts outside of kids receiving the traditional gift of money for the New Year.

Obviously, a global retail analyst or strategist would have a clue.
