Ah, so you noticed that I fudged my response just a bit. I said the Washington Post folk would make it "effect" to play it safe simply because "affect" (and I didn't put this in the post) is more ambiguous, if not ambivalent. It can go both ways; while poor ol' (but reliable) "effect" is not.
