I agree yet one of the drawbacks of accounting, imho, is that it is only useful when applied in consistent manner. Intel insisted on becoming financial company a year ago and now it is.
re: a multiple of book value
my opinion is that companies can not be valued on any specific multiple but if one should select one then multiple of bv is as good as any. In that case correlations just as applicable and should be used to determine the multiple. One way or another all the economic valuation factors would get in.
