With the integrated graphics that the nForce offers and the cost of the GeForce3 I would probably go for the integrated nForce graphics. I might upgrade the video card when the GeForce4 comes out...

RE:"Would you settle for the integrated graphics, or would you rather just get an external GeForce3?"

It's nice to have the choice. I'll be buying an nForce board shortly...

Wanna: How about you? Would you settle for the integrated graphics, or would you rather just get an external GeForce3?

Given the respective price points, I'd go for the nForce. Sure, it's not the choice for the hard-core gamer, but then I'm getting a bit too old for that ;-).

Wanna: Would you settle for the integrated graphics, or would you rather just get an external GeForce3?

Having just noticed the 415USD price tag on a GF3Ti500 (Asus, with software bundle, xbitlabs.com )… I'd like to reinforce my "yes" to nForce ;-). I can get an nForce motherboard + 512MB Crucial PC2100 memory and still have well over 100 bucks to spare.

Sure, I realize that a GF3-Ti500 would provide significantly more graphics power - I am simply arguing the "unreasonable" price differential.

Perhaps a better comparison would be the SiS735 ($60 for a board). It doesn't feature integrated graphics, but it is almost as fast as the nForce and has an integrated NIC. Throw in a GF2Ti ($100) and a SB Live! 5.1 ($30) and you're at roughly the same cost as the nForce and with better overall performance. Worse in bandwidth-intensive apps (where dual DDR channels and DASP help nForce), more in anything graphics-related, where the GF2Ti kicks integrated *ss. The sound won't be quite as good (going by the (p)reviews I've seen so far of nForce boards), but nothing that will make a huge difference to me.

Still, one major appeal of going integrated is the possibility of stuffing the whole thing into a much smaller (and quieter!) package, along with easier maintenance (driver-wise) and assembly (if you're buying a complete system).

And I'm sure YOU can see the value in having the graphics, sound and chipset all done by the same company ;-)

(which is, I should note, not a theory I necessarily subscribe to)
