I'm talking about PC platforms having a rating, but no time to load is not mostly harddrive. It's IDE, or SCSI data rates plus CPU speed+ amount of physical memory.

Tim,

If the 2 machines you are testing have identical hard drive, loading the OS would be an OK for CPU/chipset performance. The only slight complication would be that 2 different CPU/chipset combination need to load slightly different set of drivers, and detect devices differently.

Detecting devices during the boot-up could actually be a problem, since it may take a significant portion of boot-up time.
