Read it slowly. Without 'up' there could be no 'down'. Without 'hot' there could be no 'cold'. Without 'tall' there could be no 'short', etc.

Suppose you are seven feet tall. Most folks would agree that someone that height is 'tall'. But someone seven feet tall can only experience themselves as 'tall' because most people are shorter. If most folks were eight feel tall then someone who was seven feet tall would more likely experience themselves as 'short'.

Work a few examples and it makes complete sense. You can only experience yourself as something in the context of its opposite. This is true for everything in the relative realm.

Translate this now to our emotional experience. We only know what it's like to be 'happy' because we've known what it's like to be 'sad', etc.

Translate this now to our spiritual experience and the wisdom persists. We can only know and choose 'good' in the context of that which is 'not good' ('evil'). 'Right' exists as a concept only because we distinguish it from something which is 'wrong'. If nothing were 'wrong' then how could anything be 'right'? Ponder this and the purpose of the 'dark side' becomes clear. We can only know the 'light' as the 'light' in the context of the 'dark'.

So, go back to the beginning. In the absence of that which I am not, that which I am is not. I define myself as Who I Am by choosing from a field of possibility which necessarily contains Who I Am Not.
