Tony,

Hint: I recently had the opportunity for a correspondence with a member of Intel's PR department

Since you can't get a straight answer from the highest executives of Intel, you can't expect anything other than a pile of manure from Intel's PR flack.

Joe

The Pentium(R) 4 processor 2 GHz is the highest performance processor on
the desktop<snip>

Considering that the P4 2GHz loses about 85%+ of the benchmarks popularly run by benchmarking sites, against the "other" processor out there, this statement can be considered misleading at best and a blatant lie at worst.

No need to read the rest of the "pinto" comments when it is apparent that Mr. Intel rep. can't even characterize something as simple as that.

Maybe whey they mean to say is the following:

"The Pentium(R) 4 processor 2 GHz is the highest performance processor on the desktop when you are running Specfp! For most other applications the "other" processor is admittedly faster (not to mention significantly cheaper). Even with our R&D spending that exceeds the "other" processor manufacturers' revenues we cannot beat the "other" processor in most benchmarks in the one thing that is supposed to be our mainstay and our life and blood. For that we apologize to the computer industry. But don't forget: "The Pentium(R) 4 processor 2 GHz is the highest performance processor on the desktop*"

TG

*When running Specfp. For most other real world apps that you would actually want to use on the desktop the "other" processor is faster and cheaper and we get whopped from just a little bit to big time!
