Dershowitz Supports Torture

Americans may have to consider truth serums and torture after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to "celebrity lawyer and civil libertarian" Alan M. Dershowitz, Progressive Review reported today in an article headlined "Harvard Law Professor Backs Torture."

Dershowitz said he always favored letting criminals go free rather than unjustly detaining innocent people, but now "civil rights activists" need to readjust their thinking, Progressive Review said, quoting a St. Louis Post-Dispatch account of a speech Dersh delivered Sunday in St. Louis.

The legal eagle said we need a national debate about when torture is permissible and who should have the power to decide its use. Judges could issue torture warrants, he opined.

Fascinating side note: Dersh said the American Civil Liberties Union nearly yanked his membership for suggesting that national ID cards should be required.

Goodness, ACLU in its dotage is growing awfully intolerant of minority dissent.
