Hi Carl,

Once again, you blow me away with your thoroughness and complete ease in matters military. I'm glad there's folks like you and your buddies on our side. Cause the pals I selected were highly unlikely to shoot themselves in the foot, or even own a gun, for that matter. <g>

You're encouraging me to believe that we're superior to the enemy. Whether that's hubris, or an accurate assessment.... only time will tell. Of course, we're totally dominant in terms of armaments, training and all the usual means of success. The only thing I wonder about is the zeal for a fight that the enemy has. Perhaps enough softening up of the front line troops, as we are doing outside Masar-i-Sharif, will turn them to jello like it did the Iraqi troops. Let's hope so.

I'll readily admit to your superior knowledge of the mechanics of fighting. I was always one to speculate on "big picture" stuff. Like, does this war make sense? So far, I'm pretty sanguine about this one. I think we'll have a much better idea where we stand by next September. We haven't really even started.

-R.

Been thinking about strategy in Afghanistan. Why not pick a relatively out of the way, sparsely populated area and just build a base? Perhaps even during winter, when the locals are reputed to prefer hibernation over fighting?

It would seem creating a base of operations in an isolated area would minimize the problems with local guerilla activity while removing to some extent our dependence on foreign powers for airspace transit rights.
