The large majority of those populations have more immediate, less ambitious concerns, and their relative lack of personal sophistication in geo-political matters leaves them easily swayed and influenced by anyone with simple answers, a forum of some sort, and a congruent presentation. A minority willing to exploit a less informed and less thoughtful majority, in other words, for their own less than altruistic purposes. This is a dynamic that is always going to be with us, no matter what. Somebody will always be on the outside looking in. America as the Great Satan is a metaphor in hands of those who seek to use it as such that will remain largely unaffected by whatever we do or however we act in the ROW.

but I meant that to be a partial list of the sort of arrogant, bullying imperial actions taken by a nation that tend to be resented by folks who don't feel that they're getting cut in on the action. My own take on OBL is that he is engaged in a plan to establish a unified, theo-fascist Arab state from which he can project power world wide. The only purpose we serve in this equation is to provide a source of plausible excuses that help him conceal the true reality. In this scenario, how we actually interact with the world matters little -- ultimately, one propaganda rational or another will always be cooked up. --fl
