We see the high and mighty in normal contexts, and those of us who live on the furthermost fringes of the capital's high society share their shopping expeditions with what might be called the political elite. Moving through the aisles of the two local and competing supermarkets, from time to time you bump baskets with the vice president's staff, Cabinet members, senators and members of the House of Representatives plus a sprinkling of ambassadors and judges. They have one thing in common. They have been sent by their spouse or significant other to fill the ``fridge'' and look a little woebegone for being treated like everyone else. Standing in line recently to pay for his groceries was the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, former Rep. Ronald Dellums. Beautifully dressed and barbered, Ron looked every inch an elegant politician, including his disdainful attitude toward the checkout person. In fact, Ron looked miserable on a day when U.S. attacks on the Taliban were succeeding and terrorist attempts to scare us with anthrax failing. As well he might, because one of the other shoppers had recognized him. She spoke to him firmly. "Ron Dellums, you sorry creature! Are you satisfied with all the damage that you have done to our country and the deaths that you were responsible for?" Dellums hung his head, shuffled his feet and pretended that she was speaking to someone else. She had remembered Dellums' words: "I will totally dismantle every intelligence agency in this country, piece by piece, nail by nail and brick by brick." Dellums, representing the "people's republic of Berkeley," did his best to do just that until he retired last year. But Dellums wasn't acting alone. He is a very public member of the Democratic Socialists of America (the same small band of political cretins that includes John Sweeney and many of his friends in the AFL-CIO) who was voted into the chairmanship of the House Armed Services by the Democratic Caucus, 198 votes to 10. But that was only a part of the story. When these clowns voted for Dellums, they already knew of his opposition to America's efforts to stifle Moscow's encroachment into Central America. They also knew that members of his office staff provided assistance to Fidel Castro and hospitality to Salvadoran terrorists. Some conservatives muttered about treason and treachery, but no one would tackle Ron Dellums on these issues because it was "politically incorrect!" During the weeks and months ahead, when we receive news about problems in the armed forces and doubts about the efficiency of the CIA, remember who was guilty, and start with the 198 elected Democrats in the House of Representatives. Perhaps just keeping that memory alive will do the job for the secretary for homeland protection. pittsburghlive.com
