OK. So we know Intel wants to control everything.
Andy Grove first DENIED they was even a sub $1000 market.
Then he saw MediaGX and suddenly had a revelation. Basically he freaked out...and you're right...wanted to control the low end too...they call it greed...

He made two big blunders...1. forgot MHz sells even on the low end and 2. the greed and expense of Rambus.
Timna was a major embrarassment for Intel. Intellabees around here were touting it right up to the end...too...the party line you know.
