Storage Networking -- Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown's Ricci And Elling Launch Coverage of the Sector
'Putting It in Perspective'
NEW YORK, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown analysts Sabrina Ricci and George Elling launched coverage of the Storage Networking sector today with the initiation of six companies. Shares of Brocade Communications Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: BRCD - news; $30.51), Quantum Corp. (NYSE: DSS - news; $8.70) and VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS - news; $35.63) were started with a BUY investment rating while shares of Emulex Corp. (Nasdaq: EMLX - news; $28.42), McDATA Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDT - news; $19.00), and QLogic Corp. (Nasdaq: QLGC - news; $46.94) were started with an investment rating of MARKET PERFORM.

According to Ricci, Storage Networking and Software sales can continue even in an extended economic downturn given the scalability of the investment for customers as well as ROI and business continuity benefits. ``SAN penetration is still in the early phases and is among the few projects that is still being pursued,'' said Ricci. ``You don't need big hardware sales to sell switches and software.''

Moreover, Ricci believes that new technologies such as SAN virtualization, advanced SAN management tools, clustering and replication, and security can create additional opportunities for market penetration and multiple expansion.

However, she notes that the near-term financial outlook is still unclear and the stocks have experienced a strong rally recently on no fundamental changes. As such, Ricci's stock recommendations are intended to distinguish those companies that she believes will be the winners and the biggest beneficiaries once the economy turns around as well as those that are comparatively less vulnerable should a slowdown continue indefinitely.

``We believe that companies with formidable installed bases, close interaction with end-users and diverse sales strategies will have a competitive advantage and command premium returns in the future,'' said Ricci. ``In addition, companies with products less directly correlated to storage systems and server hardware sales may be somewhat shielded in the future should the slow spending environment be more protracted.''
