Sometimes fees and/or royalties are part of it, although it tends to damper enthusiasm. Good examples, Firewire and Rambus. But others have been done very successfully, ethernet is the biggest one to spring to mind. It was one of the first big ones that Intel was involved with. Maybe HT will be the same for AMD. After all, ethernet was between Intel, DEC and Xerox. On HT, it was API (at least some DEC engineers) and AMD...
