if hammer comes out at 2Ghz and performs like a 4Ghz Athlon

The model/platform isn't specified in this comparison. There is a huge performance gap between a 1GHz Athlon Classic on a KX133 board w 200Mhz bus and an hypothetical 1GHz Athlon XP on a KT266A w 266MHz bus. Probably in the 15-40% range. I strongly suspect that the former was used in the comparison.

The Athlon HP (or whatever they call it) 4000+ is slated for "2003H1", which usually would mean "2003/06" (June) production shipments. That's six months after the end of 2002. For the end of 2002, Intel merely needs to compete against the Athlon HP 3400+.

Constantine, <if hammer comes out at 2Ghz and performs like a 4Ghz Athlon that's tremendous.>

Maybe by then Intel will have improved the IPC of Pentium 4. Or if not, maybe several months after that, and AMD will win a little in the meantime.

And then I'll be wondering why the heck I'll care about a 3D game running over 200 FPS. ;-)
