The spouse of a veteran who was killed or disabled in active duty may be entitled to a five or ten point veteran's preference in civil service jobs, and in certain circumstances, the veteran's mother may be entitled to the preference. This applies not only to federal civil service jobs, but also state and localities.

Just wanted to point out that they get more than flags. It's not much, maybe, but it can certainly help get a job. Also, my understanding is that if you have a veteran's preference, it's harder to get fired from a civil service job.
