How did they get the roof up there? Simple. It gets thinner as you get near the top and they use lighter and lighter material. The top few meters are some volcanic ash cemented in. Can you imagine what it looked like with the marble exterior? (Ripped off and now part of St. Peter's.) Even with the Christian statues inside, it's still one of the most harmonious places on earth.
